Molly Trottier, B.A., Developmental Therapist
Working as a Developmental Therapist is more than a job for Molly. She invests her time, energy and herself to try to make a difference in each child’s life. Molly enjoys working as a Developmental Therapist because she likes that it is a collaborative effort between the family and the therapist. She is innately eager to learn more about speech and language in children, which has led her to pursue a Master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology (SLP). Molly is currently enrolled in graduate course work in SLP. This enables her to serve children with speech and language disorders on an advanced level.
Molly graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Disorders and a minor in Spanish. Part of earning a minor in Spanish included living and studying in Santander, Spain for three months. She works cross culturally to provide services for bilingual Spanish speaking families. Molly previously worked as a teacher’s assistant at The Montessori School of Winston-Salem, NC with children from ages 18 months to six years old.
Molly’s most recent experiences include being trained in the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and being a part of a Hospital-Home Intervention Training Program through the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Wake Medical Hospital for one year. This program focuses on educating families with premature infants. She also has extensive experience with a variety of ages and diagnoses including children with autism spectrum disorders, chromosomal disorders, seizure disorders, and global delays, as well as developmental delays and sensory issues. When she first began working for the company in May 2008, she assisted with several of Pediatric Therapy Associates’ summer programs. These programs included summer handwriting camps and our Constraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) Camp (for children who have a history of pediatric stroke, central nervous system/peripheral nerve disorders, or Erb’s palsy at some point during their childhood). In addition to having worked with our summer programs, Molly currently co-leads two social skills groups for children with autism spectrum disorders and other special needs. The groups focus on turn taking, imaginative play, and using functional communication skills.
In her current practice, Molly continues to incorporate techniques and philosophies used in Montessori Schools, including encouraging independence in choosing activities and making decisions, and utilizing personal work space. She also uses music and sign language to engage children during therapy. Periodically, she uses the Ages and Stages and HELP assessments to measure the child’s progress and as a resource for parents. Through using these tools, parents have a deeper understanding of what skills should be emerging and what skills a child should have mastered at a specific age. Molly’s love and passion for working with children with a variety of disorders is contagious.
