Molly Trottier, B.A., Developmental Therapist

Working as a Developmental Therapist is more than a job for Molly.  She invests her time, energy and herself to try to make a difference in each child’s life.  Molly enjoys working as a Developmental Therapist because she likes that it is a collaborative effort between the family and the therapist.  She is innately eager to learn more about speech and language in children, which has led her to pursue a Master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology.  She started a program part-time in June 2010 and hopes to apply what she learns to the patients on her caseload.

Molly’s most recent experiences include co-leading some of Pediatric Therapy Associates special programs.  She has assisted with the Constraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) Camp, a camp for children who have a history of pediatric stroke, central nervous system/peripheral nerve disorders, or Erb’s palsy at some point during their childhood.  Molly has also assisted with Pediatric Therapy Associates’ summer handwriting camp, addressing skills in various groups from pre-writing to independent writing. In addition to working with our summer programs, Molly currently co-leads two social skills groups for children with autism spectrum disorders and other special needs.  The groups focus on turn taking, imaginative play, and using functional communication skills.  In the summer of 2009, Molly was selected to be a part of a Hospital-Home Intervention Training Program through the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Wake Medical Hospital.  This program focuses on educating families with premature infants.  These opportunities have allowed her to gain experience with a variety of ages and diagnoses including Down syndrome, children with developmental delays and sensory issues.

Molly graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Disorders and a minor in Spanish.  Part of earning a minor in Spanish included living and studying in Santander, Spain for three months.  As a result of being submerged in Spain’s culture and having to use Spanish functionally, Molly was able to greatly improve her understanding and use of the language.  Molly previously worked as a teacher’s assistant at The Montessori School of Winston-Salem with children from ages 18 months to six years old.

In her current practice, Molly continues to incorporate techniques and philosophies used in Montessori Schools, including encouraging independence in choosing activities and making decisions, and utilizing personal work space.  She also uses music and sign language to engage children during therapy.  Periodically, she uses the Ages and Stages and HELP assessments to measure the child’s progress and as a resource for parents.  Through using these tools, parents have a deeper understanding of what skills should be emerging and what skills a child should have mastered at a specific age.  Molly’s love and passion for working with children with a variety of disorders is contagious.
